So You Want to Become a Special Education Teacher

One of the 50 best careers of 2011, a special education teacher job gains more and more popularity and becomes extremely known among young people who want to make a difference with their profession. A special education teacher does more than just teach. He also takes care of disabled children and makes sure to teach kids really closely. The job is not like any other job. Working with disabled children with speech, emotional, physical or mental disorders, autism, brain injuries, deafness, blindness or orthopedic impairments requires special preparation.

  • Requirements of a special education teacher

Not only a bachelor or a master degree is needed, but also teaching credentials and a special license. Special education teachers not only have to teach school related courses, but also train special children for the life ahead of them. In order to have a life remotely close to a normal one, these children have to progress behaviorally. They need to learn things that normal people already know when they reach their age. For them, not everything is as easy as it is for normal children. Usual habitudes and behaviors are not something that comes easy for them. But special education teachers work in their advantage. It is very tough, but at the same time very rewarding to be this kind of teacher. Special children

Being able to satisfy those needs and at the same time teach them courses somehow related to those taught in normal schools is hard to do. It is even harder working with infants and toddlers. Special education teachers who do that focus on socialization and basic skills in order to help children prepare for elementary, middle and secondary school.

  • Job opportunities of a Special Education Teacher

Even if this special job is extremely wanted, unfortunately there are not enough people to fill the available positions. Still, a growth in the employing area has been registered over the years, so things seem to improve. A special education teacher job should determine people to occupy these positions, though. The annual pay for special teachers working in kindergartens, pre-schools and elementary-schools has been of $51,000 in 2009. Those teaching in the middle-school brought home $52,000 and those working with secondary-school children made $53,000 annually. The salary is clearly well-deserved. As the activities these teachers have and as the effort they make by standing on their feet is huge, a well paid salary is obviously needed. The level of stress is also very high, given the fact that working with children who have special needs cannot be easy, despite all the preparation one has.

  • Educational skills

Patience, firmness and organizational skills are required in order to become a good special education teacher.  When it comes to education you’ll have to take special courses if you want to apply for the job. A teaching degree is not enough considering the fact that you’ll be working with difficult kids that have special needs. As soon as you qualify you should opt to do volunteering for a while. After some time it’s not going to be difficult finding a well paid job when you have prior knowledge in the field.
